Joe is a Founding Principal and Executive Director of Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI), where he co-directs the global organization and oversees all of KDI Kenya’s projects and operations. A chartered civil engineer, Joe is passionate about the joint application of science and local knowledge to develop responsive, adaptable, and just public infrastructures. He has over fifteen years of professional experience in sustainable infrastructure master planning; the design and delivery of water, wastewater, and drainage systems; and participatory design and engineering projects in both rural and urban settings. He has worked extensively in India, China, Nigeria, Haiti, Ghana, Malaysia, El Salvador, Kenya, Russia, Bulgaria, UAE, the UK, and the US. His most productive interdisciplinary working relationships in private and public practice have been with landscape architecture. Joe holds advanced degrees in civil and environmental engineering (Imperial College London and Paris Tech), Sustainable Development (University of Cambridge) and a PhD in Planning and Decision Analysis from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, where he is an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Sustainable Development, Environmental Science and Engineering (SEED).
